Contestable, and recorded as such: filing by target (persona/idol, where the corpus sits fan-mail) is the consistent alternative and loses the way the 1911 fan-magazine placement lost it - filing the channel by its target is what hides the channel, and the channel is the entry. Same shelf, same argument, forty years later; the reply moved from a monthly with a stamped-envelope rule to a letters column with a No-Prize that was deliberately nothing.

In the confessional, the production sits between cast member and viewer: editors choose which takes reach you, the confessional itself is a built room with a camera, and the "looking straight into the lens" convention is the platform's own ranking - deciding which fragments of the performer you see and which are buried. The shelf's not is verbatim the case: "not a club, a church, which does not sit between you and the person you are attached to" - the booth literally does, which is why it is institution and not the persona reading. The counter is persona/presenter: a speaker addressing you in the second person on a schedule. It loses because the entry is not about a presenter - the cast member does not speak because an institution assigned them the slot, they speak because the machinery extracts it - and the presenter's own defining constraint ("the intimacy is a job function with a shift behind it") attaches to the operators, not to the cast. The booth is infrastructure for somebody else's attachment, which is the platform mechanism, and the genre adopted the room as a convention across shows precisely because the machinery was the product.
• Thousands of letters, and a handful printed1911 · A mechanism or tacticFiled institution/platform - "the intermediary that is also the relationship" - on the test the shelf states: "Is somebody other than you and the performer in a position to change what happens between you?" The magazine held the address, the rationing and the printing, and the performer was never in the exchange at all. The shelf's not separates platform from club and from brand precisely by saying the platform's distinguishing property is that it is "infrastructure for somebody else's attachment", which is what a correspondence department with a published Chicago address and a refused studio list is. This is the earliest platform in the corpus: the structure YouTube now runs, run by a monthly with a rate card and a stamped-envelope rule. Contestable and recorded as such. persona/idol is how fan-mail is filed - by the target rather than by the channel - and that is the consistent alternative if the shelf is read narrowly; it is rejected here because filing the channel by its target is what hides the channel, and the channel is the whole entry. institution/fandom-body is the third candidate and fails the shelf's own test: the magazine made no rule a reader could be held in good standing under. Reciprocity left unset, though simulated is defensible for a department whose replies were designed to read as conversation.

Attachment to an institution that outlives every person in it. Ties to a team transfer wholesale between holders, which makes them the clearest demonstration that the object was never a person.

• Cordially yours, Betty Crocker1921 · A personFiled institution/brand, on the shelf's def: "A tie to a commercial entity that behaves recognisably like a person" - and its not is this case almost verbatim, "A brand is the case where the relationship is the asset and the person on the counter is employed by it." Betty Crocker is a home-service department's output, "the reader attached to a woman who did not exist, and the reply, however real the labour behind it, came from the persona rather than the person", typed by employed home economists under a name the company owned, which is "a real hand typing under a name no woman owned". The test answers cleanly: the far end is a commercial entity, and a competitor cannot take the attachment because the attachment is the brand. The entry's own framing is that this is "the brand-as-character mechanism at its founding" - the instance the mechanism entry names - and that mechanism already sits on this same shelf, so filing the instance beside it is the consistent reading rather than the tidy one. The counter is character/fictional-protagonist, and it is the natural first move, because Betty has an interior and a voice - "she answered letters, then took a radio voice in 1924". It loses on the one half of that shelf's test no author can survive, "if no author can override what the audience says they feel", because the fictional-protagonist is only where nobody can correct the audience, and here the author could and did correct everything: the name, the signature and the radio scripts were all chosen, and the persona "was given a voice" by decision rather than supplied by readers. The second counter is character/mascot, whose def sounds like her, "A figure with no body, no biography and no intention". It loses on that shelf's own not, "Not a written character, who can contradict you", because Betty's whole utility was that she carried a biography and a household voice - "was like the woman next door dropping in for a morning visit to share a new recipe" - which is a surface with an author rather than an inert logo. Contestable, and recorded as such.
• The supermarket club1982 · A mechanism or tacticIdentifies the household, tracks what it buys, and targets offers at what it has already bought. The card is a loyalty instrument that behaves like a relationship and carries none of one.
• The stamp card1990 · A mechanism or tacticA card, a punch, and a visible record of loyalty in the customer's own hand. The most primitive loyalty scheme on the site and the clearest: it monetises repetition without ever claiming a relationship.

The entry whose date is under review - 1880 in the data, first use given as 1890-91 by the sources - and it matters because it moves the origin of the commercial attachment back a decade.

A self-governing body with canons, rules, officers and schism. The archivist who maintains the wiki nobody else will; the writer who answers in the register the original was written in; the ultra who buys a seat and grieves on a schedule.

• The audience organised against the show1928 · A workFiled institution/fandom-body, on the shelf's test: "Does the group have rules that are not the platform's, and can it act on somebody who is not a member?" The audience that loved the show built its own machinery - a six-month newspaper campaign, a petition of more than 700,000 names to a regulator, an injunction attempt, a sponsor's boycott - and each act reached someone who was not a member of anything the audience owned, which is the shelf's criterion rather than a mere audience complaining. Opposition is not an objection to the placement: this is an organised public acting on the figure it is attached to, the fandom relationship in its political register. The counter that carries weight is persona/idol, because the attachment is to voices; and the not of that shelf - "the idol's distinguishing property is distance" - is exactly what the counter would claim, but the entry is not about the two performers, it is about the organised audience that answered the fiction they voiced. The not of this shelf - "a fandom can hold a member in good standing, and a pile-on cannot" - is decided by the petition and the boycott being durable and rules-bound rather than spontaneous. • Convention culture1976 · An event or momentA permanent global circuit with panels, dealers rooms, cosplay and a trade layer. A fandom with rooms, money, hierarchy and a calendar - an institution that is also the attachment.
• The forum that scored the edit2002 · A mechanism or tacticFiled institution/fandom-body, on the shelf's test: "Does the group have rules that are not the platform's, and can it act on somebody who is not a member?" Edgic answers both halves from the entry: the rating key - invisible, under the radar, middle of the road, complex personality, over the top, each with a tone and a visibility from one to five - was written by forum members in threads (the 2005 guidelines post still carries a roster of raters, KernelQ among them) and never by the software that carried it, so the rules are not the platform's; and the community acts outward constantly, scoring contestants who are not members and splitting its own membership over the spoiler rule, with a spoiler-free forum founded in response - which is the shelf's "canons, rules, officers and schism" performed literally rather than analogised. Its mechanism is an edge "produced by the fans rather than the performer", and edgic has no edge to the performer at all: the grade is written weekly for a person who will never read it, while the kept work - transcripts, visibility charts, a colour-coded chart for every season - is unpaid infrastructure for a relationship among the archivists themselves. The counter is institution/platform: the practice lives in the forum, the threads and moderation are the platform's, and the spoiler leaks that broke the unspoiled rule are a boundary no membership can enforce, which answers the platform's own test - "Is somebody other than you and the performer in a position to change what happens between you?" It loses on the platform's not, which keeps "an institution in the older sense - a club, a church" precisely because it "does not sit between you and the person you are attached to" - and here there is no performer on the far side to intermediate, because what attaches is the group's own rule and the table its volunteers keep. You do not migrate a platform; you migrate a membership, and the successor forum that rebuilt the archive past two thousand members did exactly that. Contestable, and recorded as such.
• The fan club1950 · A mechanism or tacticA formal organisation with membership, dues, an elected president, a newsletter and rules. Not something that happened to fans - a structure somebody built for them, which fans then ran themselves.
