Paid intimacy
Paid message apps where a window shaped exactly like the one holding your best friend costs about four dollars a month per artist, plus anniversary counters that make the bond feel cumulative and streaks that convert it into a hostage situation.
The lane where the feeling is genuine and the design is not accidental. Every mechanism here was tested, found to work, and shipped. The person is not being scammed, which is exactly what makes it difficult - the affection is real and so is the invoice, and the industry is extremely good at keeping those two facts in separate mental drawers.
Manipulation. One-sided attachment engineered for somebody else's benefit. Paid intimacy, parasocial persuasion, sasaeng, grief extraction, the streak. The lane that pays the bills and the lane that causes the most harm, frequently at the same time.
Application. One-sided attachment put to work on purpose. Creator economies, community, fandom as infrastructure, and the things that genuinely help people. Not automatically good - a tool with an obvious use is a tool that will also get a bad one.
