CHARACTER

The one who was never real. Fictional, played, myth, or real enough to have become a character. A room we rehearse feeling in. The rent is cheap and the landlord is imagination.

The definition, the test and the boundary →

House of the Dragon ended and the fans are furious at the show, not the characters

NME on the backlash to season three. This is a fight about storytelling and everyone is using the wrong words.

This is a fight about a story and it is being fought with the vocabulary of a parasocial grievance, which is why it is so ugly. When a character does something you hate, a well-adjusted viewer says the writing was bad. A parasocial viewer says you did this to me. Both are in that thread and the gap between them is the whole argument.

The written character 2 stories · 29 entries

Somebody described in a book and therefore available to an unlimited number of people at once, none of whom can be contradicted. The largest parasocial population on this site and the one with the longest memory.

The played role 1 story · 6 entries

An actor inside a character, where the audience's tie splits between the two and the split is itself the subject. Pee-wee Herman is the clean case: a performed self with a person performing it, and a show built on being able to switch it off.

The myth 2 stories · 1 entry

Figures predating any surviving text, carried by retelling. Pygmalion, and the long list of figures who were never written down and are not going out of fashion.

The mascot 0 stories · 6 entries

A figure with no body, no biography and no intention: an emote, a logo-person, a face given a name. The purest parasocial object on the site, because nothing can disappoint it.

The historic as character 0 stories · 3 entries

A real person who has been flattened into a type - the long-suffering husband, the tragic wife, the mad king - and is now met in the type rather than in the life. The flattening is the problem, not the person.
